Grentperez Expands Backflips In A Restaurant Tour With Long-Awaited Australia & New Zealand Dates

MELBOURNE, AU (May 08, 2025) – Australian singer/songwriter grentperez is bringing The Backflips In A Restaurant Tour to theatres across Australia and New Zealand this October and November!

At just 23-years-old, grentperez has mastered his own genre of pop music, charming audiences across the globe with sweetly crooned love songs that strike a brilliant balance of dreamy sincerity and lighthearted fun. Since first bursting onto the scene with his gold-certified debut single “Cherry Wine” (a 2021 release that hit No. 1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 chart in several countries), the Sydney-born musician has brought his magnetic live show to stages all over the world as support for acts like Rex Orange County, Wallows, Laufey, and Cavetown, in addition to drawing sold-out crowds on his own headline tours and earning acclaim from the likes of NPR (who hailed him as an “artist who makes music you can fall in love to and fall in love with”).

Fresh off his win as Emerging Songwriter of the Year at the 2024 APRA Awards, grentperez has just released his full-length debut with Backflips in a Restaurant—a thrilling evolution of his roots as a bedroom-pop sensation, mixing elements of R&B, indie-folk, pop-punk, symphonic pop, ’70s soft-rock, and so much more into his most boldly original body of work to date. Upon its release, Backflips in a Restaurant was named triple j’s featured album of the week, debuted #3 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and received praise from Rolling Stone Australia, NME and more.

The Backflips In A Restaurant Tour kicks things off on Thursday 30 October in Fremantle, followed by stops in Adelaide, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, before wrapping up with a hometown show in Sydney on Wednesday 12 November.

ABOUT GRENTPEREZ:

At just 23-years-old, Australian singer/songwriter grentperez has mastered his own genre of pop music: carefree but soulful, offbeat but refined, escapist but unforgettably sincere. Since first bursting onto the scene with his gold-certified single “Cherry Wine” (a No. 1 hit on Spotify’s Viral 50 chart in several countries), the Sydney-born musician has morphed from a bedroom-pop sensation to an undeniable creative force, endlessly matching his playful charm and sophisticated vocal talents with a truly unbridled imagination. Over the last few years alone, he’s amassed a global following and drawn sold-out crowds on a series of headline tours, in addition to taking the stage at leading festivals like Lollapalooza and opening for Rex Orange County, Wallows, Laufey, Cavetown, and more. In his long-awaited full-length debut, grentperez now delivers Backflips in a Restaurant: an intimate yet wildly fun album that merges elements of R&B, indie-folk, symphonic pop, and so much more into his most daringly original work to date.

For grentperez, the title to Backflips in a Restaurant in many ways encapsulates his entire philosophy as an artist. “I love that phrase because there’s a sense of controlled chaos, which is exactly what I want to create with my music,” says grentperez, whose latest triumphs include winning Emerging Songwriter of the Year at the 2024 APRA Awards. “I’ve always known I’ve wanted to keep evolving and changing it up, instead of playing it safe and making the same thing over and over.”

Over the course of 13 eclectic tracks, Backflips in a Restaurant brings grentperez’s breezy crooning to songs imbued with both bittersweet longing and lighthearted humor. To that end, “Dandelion” finds him joining forces with fellow Sydney-based singer/songwriter Ruel for a sax-infused bop built on summery beats and an irresistibly tender vocal turn from each artist. “A lot of my songs come from experimenting in the studio, and ‘Dandelion’ started with playing around on a makeshift rubber-bridge guitar my producer had brought in,” grentperez recalls. “I was in L.A. and missing my girlfriend, so it turned into a very personal song about being far away from the one you love.” Another track sparked from his experience with long-distance romance, the fantastically cheeky “Need You Around” pushes into pop-punk terrain with its chant-along chorus and pogo-ready rhythms. And on “Movie Scene,” grentperez taps into a dazzling mix of inspirations (’90s neo-soul, early-millennium hip-hop, the arthouse films of Chinese auteur Wong Kar-wai), arriving at a heart-on-sleeve love song lit up in lush strings and delightfully loopy lyrics (e.g., “We could be like classics…Crash our love in the Atlantic/I wanna be hopelessly romantic with you”). “One thing I love about this album is that some of the songs required me to take on different characters, and with ‘Movie Scene’ it was fun to pretend to be all cool and suave,” he reveals.

Made with a stacked lineup of producers/co-writers including Jennifer Decilveo (Hozier, Miley Cyrus), Sam de Jong (Gracie Abrams, Phantogram), and Linden Jay (Doja Cat, Stormzy), Backflips in a Restaurant expands on the kaleidoscopic musicality shown on past work like grentperez’s acclaimed EPs When We Were Younger (a 2023 release ranging from Philly soul to bossa nova) and Conversations with the Moon (a 2022 project that prompted NPR to praise him as an “artist who makes music you can fall in love to and fall in love with”). Although he names modern-day iconoclasts like Tyler, The Creator among his musical touchstones, grentperez mainly grew up on R&B, ’70s soft-rock, and the super-smooth Filipino love songs his family members often selected when singing karaoke. At the age of 12, he started posting guitar-accompanied covers on YouTube, steadily gaining a major following and eventually making his auspicious debut with “Cherry Wine” in 2021.

With its tracklist encompassing everything from “2DK” (a massively catchy and subtly absurdist party song) to “Reason Why” (a sweetly folky reflection on social media and self-image), Backflips in a Restaurant ultimately affirms grentperez as an artist with no limit to his vision. “I feel like I’m still discovering my voice, but this record definitely gave me the confidence to keep being bold and keep making whatever feels right to me,” he says. “When people hear the album, I’d love for them to recognize that the same is true for them, instead of feeling stuck in whatever perceptions they might have of themselves. I hope it helps them feel free to do what they want.”
