English Punk Rock Duo Soft Play Announce Their Australia 2025 Tour

MELBOURNE, MONDAY OCTOBER 14, 2024: English punk rock duo SOFT PLAY announce they’ll be performing Australian headline shows this January and February 2025. Off the back of their highly acclaimed LP ‘Heavy Jelly’, released on July 19 this year, and embarking on their first headline tour in six years, the band is set to ignite venues across Australia this summer with uncompromising, full-throttle intensity.

‘’The highlights of Heavy Jelly are enormous’’ ★★★★ The Guardian

“A comeback that delivers beyond all expectations.” ★★★★ - Kerrang!

‘’Funnier and bleaker than before…Soft Play get a hard yes from me’’ – ★★★★ FT

‘’Soft Play are entering a new dawn’’ - ★★★★ Line Of Best Fit

Across three UK Top Ten charting albums, taking root from their 2015 Mercury Prize nominated debut, SOFT PLAY (formerly known as SLAVES) quickly established themselves as an influential force in the British rock landscape. Their distinctive, unapologetic approach to the genre and kinetic live performances have fortified the band’s avid global fanbase, earning them widespread critical acclaim and coveted festival slots. Along the way, they’ve won the hearts of The Streets’ Mike Skinner, the Beastie Boys Mike D, won multiple NME Awards, had Skepta join them on stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and toured with The Prodigy, Kasabian, Jamie T and Wolf Alice.

Recent headline gigs and festival performances – including Glastonbury, Boardmasters, Download Festival, and an upcoming sold-out UK Tour including Brixton Academy in London - have shown that SOFT PLAY have upped the ante following their return, both in terms of raw power and mischievous humour. As Louder Than War’s review of the Brixton show enthused, “Their raucous energy, sardonic humour, and unadulterated punk spirit proved their return is not only welcome but essential.”

SOFT PLAY kicks off their Australia 2025 tour at Melbourne’s 170 Russell on January 27, followed by Factory Theatre in Sydney on January 29, The Triffid in Brisbane on January 30, and concluding at Magnet House, Perth on February 1.

About SOFT PLAY:

SOFT PLAY’s life-affirming comeback with fourth album ‘Heavy Jelly’ has created a wealth of memorable moments in recent months, from the scathing satire of ‘Punk’s Dead’ via the snarling rage of ‘Act Violently’ to the poignancy of ‘Everything And Nothing’. Further accelerating their return with a career defining set at Glastonbury, a standout performance at Download plus a Hyde Park show as guests to their pal Robbie Williams, SOFT PLAY’s new era is a tale of brotherhood, coming back against the odds, and delivering their best album to date.

Beyond the singles, ‘HEAVY JELLY’ wastes no time in commanding your attention with ‘All Things’ - what other album opens with a choir and then the sneering opening lyric, “I’m the nicest dickhead you’ve ever met”? And they keep that full-throttle unpredictability throughout with nu-metal attacks, slamming hardcore and swaggering, heavyweight grooves underpinning tales full of observational wit and light-hearted self-reflection. But the closing ‘Everything And Nothing’ reveals that there’s heart beyond their playfulness, a paean of mourning and loss in which its simple, evocative declaration “I feel love” perfectly summarises the ‘HEAVY JELLY’ experience.

As Laurie explains, the key to SOFT PLAY unlocking all of that was relatively simple: “We’re like brothers in the sense that you can’t always be best mates with your brother, but now we’ve got it back. We needed to learn how to be friends again, and then all the silliness comes out of that - which is what was fun about our band in the first place.”
